Projective Sandscapes / Elena Longhin, Chris Lo & Howe Chan - AA School of Architecture
In October 2014 the Aral Sea 68,000 square kilometres basin has been announced extinct. What used to be a seabed is now a saline field covered with wind-blown sand. Reckless water resources practices implemented since the 60s to harvest cotton turned the sea into the biggest manmade desert.

NTUA Student Team Receives an Honourable Mention in European Architecture Medals for the project "Sub_Zero - Life Beyond Parking"
This diploma project chose to place its setting in downtown Athens. Our attention was captured by its latent dynamic and thus turned towards parking lots. Those structures can be seen as machines a habiter. The inhabitant, the car, seems to be deserting them. Amongst all types, that of the underground seemed more challenging. Two radically different locations were chosen so as to create a dipole, the parts of which constitute a case study.

A PARTICIPATORY PLAYGROUND: A NETWORK OF PLAYSCAPES IN THE CITY OF LARISSA / DESIGN THESIS BY E. DIAMANTOULI & A. FOUSTERI
EN / GR

The objective of this diploma project is the design process of unconventional play spaces, using as our case study the city of Larissa while we focus on the participatory design methods. Firstly, we analyzed the existing network of playgrounds and investigated the circumstances and the way they are constituted. Furthermore, a questionnaire was created, addressed to both children and adults, in order to make clear how various users perceive places for playing in urban and sub-urban environments.

INTERPETATION & PARADIGM IN ARCHITECTURAL META-THEORY / RESEARCH THESIS BY DIMITRIS HARTONAS
Editor: Anthi Rozi

EN / GR

This study stands in-between two distinct areas, modern epistemology and architectural theory and interpretation. A dual approach is being carried out in an attempt to transfer concepts and methods of approach from the field of philosophy of science to that of architectural discourse. By examining architecture at a meta-theoretical level, i.e. making architectural theory itself the object of theorising, it is attempted to transcribe epistemological concepts, tools and conceptual schemas into the field of architectural interpretation and theory.

The exploration of a monument. The National Theater of Rhodes is one of the major works of the Italian Rationalism in Dodecanese. It was founded and implemented by the Italian architect Armando Bernabiti (1936-1937). The theater is an example of historical transition from the Italian occupation until the integration of Dodecanese with Greece, reflecting all the interventions that were made internally and outside the building over the years.

PUBLIC PROFILE & ARCHITECTURE: PROMOTION AS A PART OF ARCHITECTURE CREATION / RESEARCH THESIS BY G. KALLIGIANNAKI & TH. SANIDA
EN / GR

From the beginning of 20th century architects are occupied by the matter of publicity. In 1920 Le Corbusier publishes the magazine “L’ Esprit Nouveau”, starting a new era in project promotion. Later, the couple of Charles and Rey Eames, who wanted to transmit an abundace of information to the architectural community, focused on the methods of projection. They produced short films and organised the first exhibitions featuring multimedia ways of presentation. At the end of the 20th century, with the organisation of Venice Biennale in 1980 and the institution of Pritzker Prize in 1979, the architectural work is now on public display.

Editor: Anthi Rozi
EN / GR

The workshop’s assignment is the design of an archetypal social condenser: a space to accommodate a model of what is referred to as the “body politic”; a monumental interior, in which the representatives of the “Rulers” and the “Ruled” confront each other, and where the conflict between the Public and the Private is revealed: a politically unique public function, a Public Condenser.
